graduate scheme

A fantastic opportunity for graduating jewellers/silversmiths to join Alloy – Hereford Jeweller’s group, as one of just two 18-month graduate placements starting in Summer/Autumn 2008.

What is Alloy?:
Alloy is a group of 20 professional designer jewellers, silversmiths and metalworkers at all stages in their careers. Established in 1993, the group provides support and communication for makers based in Herefordshire, coordinating exhibitions and projects in the West Midlands and beyond. In 1998, the group was awarded funding from the National Lottery for a purpose built jewellery workshop at The Courtyard Centre for the Arts, in Hereford City Centre. With additional funding from Herefordshire Council and West Midlands Arts the workshop was equipped with tools, IT facilities and photography equipment, all of which are available for use by its members. We also have permanent exhibition showcases in the foyer at The Courtyard, featuring rotating exhibitions from both Alloy’s own membership and other craft makers in the area. We have recently received funding from Net Infinity to extend our current marketing, training and exhibition programmes, including building on our very successful graduate placement scheme.

What’s on Offer?:
Free membership of Alloy for 18 months (usually £150/year) Unlimited use of the Alloy workshop, IT & Photography equipment at The Courtyard Arts Centre in Hereford City Centre. (worth £25 a week) Materials bursary towards production of your first collection. (Subject to availability of funding) Exhibition and promotional opportunities. Start-up/business mentoring.

Eligibility:
Applicants must be graduates from a BA/HND or similar qualification in Jewellery / Silver-smithing / Contemporary Applied Arts / 3-D / Metalwork or other relevant subject, graduating Summer 2008. Must plan to reside in and/or set up in business within Herefordshire borders.

Applications:
You will be required to submit a portfolio of samples and images to a selection panel and attend an informal interview. There is no application deadline for 2008. You can apply at any time but early application is advised as places are very limited. We aim to have confirmed places by July 2008.

Interested students should contact Ben Woodcock by email at graduates@alloyjewellers.org.uk
He will be happy to discuss further details of the placement and show you around the facility.
